Spring scents

Scent carries such strong memories. I wish you could smell this double violet– it reminds me of all the fond memories with a woman who was our next door neighbour growing up– she was British and for some reason – this beautiful flower just whispers Mrs. Bennett. If we could choose our grandparents- I would choose her to be my grandmother- I loved her so much

This cedar is for my Dad. We collected it on the beach this weekend – he makes brushes with them with a class that he is teaching at The Metchosin Summer School of the Arts

With the recent wind storm, this daffodil got knocked over and quite “dirty”. I washed it off, but it wouldn’t come off. I celebrate it for being a survivor.

My parsley is up and the fence is in place for the coming veggie growing season. I’ve started some things in the greenhouse– so soon I will transplant them out here.

Making a new home–  It’s difficult to see in this picture, but today a small bird started making a nest in my basket. The clothes pegs that were out all winter have started to have mold on them, so I’ll use them for something other than clothes. In the meantime, I had just placed this other basket with new pegs on top. It made for a lovely nesting site except that it is at the top of the stairs to the garden…so it can’t stay.

I felt so badly that I had to move the clothes pins basket, that I added (not shown) some small pieces of dryer lint to try and make up for all the hard work that this bird had done all afternoon. I am hoping they come back and take their compensation with them…

Tonight I looked and it didn’t seem that he had taken any. I guess he and his partner are going to look for a new site for their home tomorrow. I  hope it’s somewhere fabulous! Location, location, location

Postscript:  I looked today March 16th and the dryer lint was all gone!  I’m so glad they liked my peace offering!

project: garden comfort

I wanted to show you the results of some pillows I bought at a church garage sale on Friday and then some outdoor fabric (that is supposed to be fade resistant). It was expensive so I only bought two meters (still some more to be used of the small stripe). I bought the burlap ribbon also at the garage sale and doubled it so that you couldn’t see the bright pink underneath. I slanted one pillow to show you that I was using all the fabric but only had enough for one side.

I chose blue because in the garden I didn’t want a colour that would compete with the stars–my plants!

I am happy with my update- my old cushions were very, very well used and pretty worn out. (they will make a nice dog bed, plus I will re-cover some of them)

Family Day walk

This afternoon we celebrated Family Day with a walk. Here are some of the beautiful flowers that I saw as we meandered along. Because it is overcast, it actually provides nice light (although if the sun were to peak out one of these days, I wouldn’t complain!)

Happy Family Day!
